Dreadnut Jamaica

Jamaican Indigenous Seed Jewelry

Collected from trees and vines, up in the hills, along river banks and in the bush, these naturally beautiful seeds lend themselves to some unique jewelry. A few Jamaicans collect them and spend hours pulling them out of their pods, just so we can enjoy them. Mixing them with stones and glass beads creates some beautiful one of kind pieces.

Jamaican Nickel is grown on a vine, that usually grows wild on a tree. They can be found along the seaside or up in the bush.  The pod that the seed grows in is very hard and is covered with razor sharp thorns. One must take great care in collecting these pods and must use thick leather gloves and a hammer to break open the pods.  Nickel comes in a variety of colors. Some in the white to yellow- orange  and others in gray to olive green.

Jamaican John Crow seeds drop off of tall trees. They are very hard on the surface which makes drilling holes into them a difficult task. John Crow is a term Jamaicans use for a vulture  and these red seeds resemble the eyes of a vulture.
Jamaican Job Tears grow primarily along river banks on small bushes. They range in color from white to shades of gray.

These beads are natural and untreated. Strong and durable  naturally  they will last  for many, many years, but they should not be submerged in water for any long period of time
since they are drilled.
